Death started out as a poem, reflecting on Kat’s struggle with depression and suicidal ideation. The repeated line, “but you did not come” implies that death is not going to make her morbid wish come true, but merely torment her existence with the inevitability that one day her suffering will end, but until then, to keep hanging on.
“I know how it feels to long for death, and when death does not come, it means something. You’re supposed to be here, and so am I. You are not alone, for I am here with you, suffering with you. I love you, keeping hanging on, I know it’s hard. We will get better.” -Kat
lyrics
DEATH
I longed to see your grim face in this place,
But you did not come...
I wished for you all day yesterday,
But you did not come...
Drowning in misery,
I’m drowning in misery!
But you did not come...
The sweet abyss calls my name,
to taunt me!
But you did not come...
Oh death!
Why must you torment me?
Oh death!
momento mori
(Instrumental)
Oh death!
I hear you whisper through the trees
Oh death!
momento mori
Give to me,
precious eternity!
Watch my soul escape...
This empty shell,
it's all I’ll leave behind,
while my corpse decays...
Oooo....
